Big Companies Big Names Big Jobs

large office bulindThere are still over 12 million Americans looking for work.  The job market, however, is showing signs of recovery. More than 1.2 million jobs have been created in the past seven months, according to the Labor Department. And layoffs have been tapering off for more than a year now. The news is promising, however. Some of the biggest American companies are hiring. Amazon, the world’s largest online retailer, has over two thousand jobs to fill. They are looking for software developers, project managers, and financial analysts.  Oracle is next on the list. Oracle has over two thousand positions to fill as well. They are looking for software developers, sales representatives, application developers, and consultants. The company is hiring all over the country, but mostly in California. The multinational software, Microsoft, is seeking designers, builders, and architects of the next generation of computing and entertainment. Other companies that are hiring are JPMorgan Chase, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Apple, and AT&T.

McDonald’s is set to hire over 50,000 workers that include management positions and restaurant staff.  American Express has reported earnings that it has boosted salaries and benefits by 15 percent and has added 3,300 jobs. There are presently more than 500 job openings on the company’s site. Boeing is ramping up production of its 737, 777 and 747 programs and as a result is said to be hiring about 100 workers a week for the past few months. The aerospace giant ended the year with a hiring spree. Caterpillar’s sales jumped 57 percent in the latest quarter as companies are buying more of its heavy equipment anticipating the recovery. Caterpillar has added close to 20,000 workers in the past year, though that’s a mix of full-time and part-time workers. Consumer spending may be picking up but shoppers are sending a strong message that they need incentives. As a result, discount sites like Groupon are thriving. The company had 60 employees and announced plans to hire another 100 this year to meet demand, particularly as it ramps up for its IPO later this year.

Areas of job growth are in marketing, human resources, non-profit, development and supply-chain management, energy, healthcare, technology, and business services. In addition, companies are gradually transitioning from temporary workers to full-time employment.  The progression of the job market is moving in the right direction. The biggest companies are hiring and there is more to come.
