Hire A Vet!

hiring militaryMany businesses have specifically designed initiatives for hiring our returning veterans. They have served our country and there is a patriotic responsibility to help those returning from active military duty in the pursuance of a career at home. Most have had access to skilled training.  Skilled training refers to the instruction a service member receives in his or her assigned military career field. This usually occurs after a service member completes Basic Training. Depending on the career, a service member attends one of many diverse skill training schools. This includes hands-on training, classroom instruction, and field instruction.  Returning veterans have a lot to offer. Hire a Vet!

Army Advanced Individual Training covers seventeen career fields. It is more than just training.  It focuses on discipline and work ethic.  This bodes well in the work world.

The Navy calls its advanced training “A” School.  It offers technical training in many different career fields that range from photography to multiple world languages. These are certainly highly sought in the work place.

Air Force technical training provides instruction on mechanical, administrative, general and electronic careers from highly trained instructors with years of experience in the field. Much of Air Force technical training can be applied toward college credit.

The Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Reserve train enlistees in a variety of career fields, including safety and law enforcement, maritime patrols, technology, environmental operations and business administration.

Regardless of your political leanings, or specific timetable for the troops to return, we can all agree that once these brave men and women return home, we owe them the opportunity to find good jobs and assist them in starting or resuming their careers.  It is hopeful that business owners will take critical steps to help returning military personnel by giving them job. The hiring of a vet also has tax implications – federal and state tax incentives provide another good reason to hire a vet.

While business owners should make every effort to assist these returning veterans by hiring them, there are a number of federal and state tax incentives that should provide an added reason to give them top priority in the job market. Currently, 26 states offer partial or total exclusions, from state-level taxes for combat and/or other military compensation paid to troops/reserves. Federal tax benefits for hiring many veterans are available to business owners in any state. The federal benefits are available under the Work Opportunity Tax Credit Program.  Other federal and state benefits, including training funds, tuition reductions, and the aforementioned military pay exemptions, are also available in many states. Military experience can also translate into civilian licensing and certification for careers such as electrician or software engineer.

There are several good reasons to hire returning veterans – it is the right thing to do.  But, in addition to this, the military training programs and discipline learned in the military make a returning service man an ideal addition to all companies and corporations.
