What You Must Not Say in an Interview

quiet not sayHow many job interviews have you failed? Are they so many that you have lost count? Ever pondered over the reasons as to why you could not get past the interview stage? Maybe you did not have the required skills; maybe your qualifications were not enough; maybe you lacked confidence and maybe, you said things you should have never said.

We interviewed a hiring manager and he said there are so many interviewees who give the worst possible answers to some of the question and say things that should not be said. He told us that nearly 33% of candidates were of this sort. We asked him to share some of these answers with us and here is what he said.

I want to switch because my boss is such a jerk, and I so hate that about him

There are over 58% of people who want a new job because they cannot get along with their bosses and mangers, and find them to be horrible. The interviewer will have an idea you may not be on good terms with your boss, but you just cannot be outright and say this out loud.

By the way, this is not just for your current boss it is for all the bosses whom you have had in the past. Say even one thing against them, and your name will be cut off the list.

I probably will not get this job because I am so much older than you are

Again a wrong statement; your to-be boss may be years younger than you, but you should not highlight this at an interview or say anything that brings attention to the age difference like ‘back when I was younger’ or ‘when I was younger, around the same age as you’.  And anyway it is not true as well; if you do well, there is a good chance you will be hired.

What will I be paid? More than what I earn right now?

Salary is really important to you and your interviewer already knows this. However, the interview is just not the right time to bring it up. Do not mention it until you have been offered a position.

So you do not want to be kicked out of the hiring process, right? Avoid being so blunt at interviews and do not just ramble on about everything thing without giving any thoughts to what the interviewer will think of you. We really hope we you will be cautious in your next interview, and we wish you luck.
