The Braves dropped a bombshell Monday morning, announcing plans to build a new $672 million stadium at Interstates 75 and 285, leaving downtown Atlanta after nearly 50 years.

Team officials said the new million stadium, which will be part of a 60-acre mixed-use development, will be built in partnership with Cobb County and be open in time for the start of the 2017 baseball season. The new Braves stadium will have between 41,000 to 42,000 seats — significantly fewer seats than the 50,000 seats at Turner Field.

“The reason for moving is simple,” the team said in a statement. “The current location has certain issues that are insurmountable and will only become more problematic over the years. These fundamental issues involve how you, our fans, access Turner Field. There is a lack of consistent mass transportation, a lack of sufficient parking and a lack of direct access to interstates. Furthermore, the Braves do not have control over the development of our immediate surroundings.”
