Construction giant behind high-profile Portland projects gets new president

joel-andersen-4_750xx1109-1479-56-0A Portland construction giant behind everything from Pearl District condominiums to downtown office buildings has appointed its first new president in nearly 30 years.

Andersen Construction, a nearly 65-year-old general contractor headquartered in Portland, announced this week that Joel Andersen has been named president of the company. The grandson of company founder Andy Andersen, Joel Andersen will lead and oversee complete operation of the company.

He takes over for his father, David Andersen, who has been president since 1987.

Joel Andersen started working in Andersen’s estimating department while in high school and served as a project engineer while attending Oregon State University’s Construction Engineering Management program. In 2008, he opened Andersen’s Seattle office, which is currently managing more than $150 million in annual volume.

In 2012, Joel Andersen was promoted to vice president of business development and has been largely responsible for the company’s entrance into new markets and recent growth.

Andersen Construction operates offices in Portland, Seattle, Boise and Eugene. Current company projects include nine large-scale mixed use developments and three hospital towers in Portland, including the Cosmopolitan condo tower in the Pearl and the Block 37 apartments in the South Waterfront.

Andersen is also at work on a 41-story apartment tower in downtown Seattle, four mixed use developments in downtown Boise and the new headquarters for Northwest Community Credit Union in Eugene. Its annual volume averages close to $400 million.
