Just as patients complain that doctors speak their own medical language, job hunters quickly learn that interviews follow a certain protocol and use specialized vocabulary. Learning to translate the code into everyday English can help maximize the opportunity in employment interviews.  After they have determined that a physician has a medical license and the basic, required job qualifications, a potential employer looks for more subjective information. The employer wants to know "How well do you communicate? Can I trust you? Do you care about us?" and especially "Will you fit in here?"

Most interview questions can be translated more than one way. Here are some examples:

"Tell me about yourself" means
• Show me you can present yourself professionally.
• What makes you different from the other applicants?
• What else is there to you besides what I see on the resume?

"Tell me about a time when you and your current supervisor disagreed" means
• Do you back up your views with sound logic and good judgment?
• I need to know conflict resolution will not be an issue, as well as, your style of communicating when you are upset

"Describe your ideal work setting and job" means
• Do you know what you want, and where you want to do to do it? Can I be sure this is going to be a long-term commitment for you?
• Are you motivated to do what I need to have done?

"Tell me about a time when your coworkers gave you feedback about your actions" means
• If you chose a compliment, are you trying to impress me? Are you arrogant?
• Will you admit that you have flaws and indicate how you use feedback to make improvements?
• Can you handle criticism? How well?
