Breast Imaging Division Chief Description

The University of Arizona (UArizona) – Department of Medical Imaging (DMI) is seeking an inspirational leader and fellowship-trained radiologist for Chief of the Division of Breast Imaging at the UArizona College of Medicine – Tucson. Appointment rank is commensurate with experience. Reporting directly to the Chair of Radiology, Dr. Geoffrey Rubin, this is a fundamental position for candidates who seek to build a dedicated, growth-oriented team of excellent clinical breast imaging specialists, innovative researchers, and enthusiastic educators.

Prospective candidates will have an MD or DO degree, ABR Board Certification in Diagnostic Radiology, and fellowship training in Breast Imaging. The ideal applicant will be eligible for licensure in the State of Arizona and will be a committed leader and have deep expertise in all aspects of Breast Imaging including screening and diagnostic mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI, and multimodality image-guided breast interventions, both from clinical and scientific perspectives.

The Department of Medical Imaging is a world leader in MRI and transforms patient care through precision diagnostics and imaging-guided therapeutics. The Department provides clinical service to the two main hospitals: Banner University Medical Center – Tucson (479 licensed beds and the sole Level 1 Trauma Center in Southern Arizona) and Banner University Medical Center – South (150 licensed beds), and the Diamond Children’s Medical Center, as well as two outpatient centers: Banner University Medicine – North and the Advanced Breast Imaging Center.

In addition, the Division of Breast Imaging encompasses:

  • Dedicated breast imaging center with tomosynthesis and breast MRI on site.
  • Interventional services include tomosynthesis guided breast biopsy, MR guided breast biopsy, and Savi-Scout reflector localization procedures.
  • Designated as Breast Imaging Center of Excellence by the ACR.
  • Highly collegial and collaborative work environment, including with dedicated breast surgery and oncology physician colleagues.
  • Essential part of the Breast Health Program at the University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC) since 2009. UACC is Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in and serving the entire State of Arizona.
  • Breast Imaging has a non-ACGME fellowship program approved for one candidate.

  • Research prototype breast CT with NIH grant support and industry collaboration

  • Other current/recent areas of research: NSAID effects on clinical and imaging breast biomarkers, neoadjuvant treatment for clinical stage II or III estrogen positive breast cancer in post-menopausal women, and Metformin for reduction of obesity-associated breast cancer risk

World-Class Facilities:

Banner – University Medical Center Tucson opened its new nine-story, $446 million hospital tower (Tower 1) on April 22, 2019. The 670,000-square-foot teaching hospital features 228 private rooms, 20 new operating rooms, new diagnostic imaging, and cardiac catheterization labs. Tower 1 offers two 1.5T scanners and one 3T MR. BUMC-South offers a 1.5T scanner. Additionally, two 3T MR scanners are located at BUMC-North.

Breast Imaging is offered at the Advanced Breast Imaging Center. Scanners at ABIC include two 3D Tomographic Hologics units for mammography, an Acuson S3000 Ultrasound unit, a 1.5T GE Artist MR scanner, and a DEXA scanner.

The DMI is seeking an individual who is able to work with diverse students, trainees, and colleagues, and who has experience with a variety of teaching methods and curricular perspectives.
