The mission of the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at theUniversity of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine is to provide compassionate, high-quality care to our patients; to nurture innovation in research, and to teach patients, families, medical trainees, and ancillary health care providers about lung health, disease,  and treatment.

Division faculty members include nationally and internationally recognized experts in interventional pulmonary medicineand in the diagnosis and treatment of complex airway problems. Few programs in pulmonary at U.S. medical schools offer this same level of expertise and training.

Due to departmental growth and programmatic expansion, the Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at UCI Health is currently recruiting for a full-time, subspecialty trained Interventional Pulmonologist to join the highly active Department of Medicine. Serving as a Core Faculty member in Interventional Pulmonology, the Interventional Pulmonologist will have a strong clinical and educational background and be expected to deliver patient care in an academic setting, teach medical students, residents, fellows, engage in an independent and extramurally – funded clinical research program, and provide service to the University.

Where You’ll Work:

  • Innovation in Interventional Pulmonology: Our team is one of the first in the state to perform minimally invasive therapeutic procedures with a specialized airway recannulization and tumor debulking device.
  • Board-certified Interventional Pulmonologists use minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat the full range of lung diseases and cancers, such as: Severe asthma, Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Interstitial lung disease, Tracheal stenosis, Pleural disease.
  • Most procedures are performed by bronchoscopy. Conducts studies using most advanced laser technologies.
  • Interventional Pulmonology Caseload: Currently one IP on staff, seeing an average of 4-6 patients per day.
  • Access to on-site Interventional Pulmonary Suite with anesthesia.
  • Opportunity for inpatient consult service in general pulmonology and ICU rotations in one-week blocks with weekends.
  • Collaboration: We work closely with cancer specialists, including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, and other providers at the UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to offer advance treatments to lung cancer patients.
  • Significant funding received, primarily from the Veterans Affairs merit program, California’s tobacco-related disease research program, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Defense.
  • Provide medical students and residents with superb educational experiences, including interventional Web site training in bronchoscopy.

Professional Qualifications:

UCI is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute through their research, teaching and/or service to the diversity and excellence of the academic community.

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s) or equivalent.
  • Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care.
  • Satisfactory completion of an Internal Medicine residency and Pulmonary/Critical Care fellowship from an ACGME accredited program. Applicant must have completed an Interventional Pulmonary Fellowship by date of hire.
  • Active and unrestricted California Medical License or eligibility for State of California Medical Licensure.
  • Research and funding, including NIH and/or other federal awards and a prior record of high impact publications is a plus.
  • Interest in clinical teaching.
  • Rank and academic track will be commensurate with candidate training, qualifications, and experience.
