Pulmonary and Critical Care Division Chief Description

The Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine is seeking a dynamic leader with strong credentials in clinical medicine and basic, translational or clinical research to serve as the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division Chief. The successful candidate will embody academic stature, accomplished clinical skills, and leadership and management skills to build and expand all aspects of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at UCI, while advancing the research and educational activities of the program. This is a tenure/tenure-track, or Clinical of Medicine senate faculty position at the Assistant/Associate/Professor level.

The Division of Pulmonary Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at UC Irvine’s School of Medicine is committed to providing quality care for patients with a broad range of lung diseases and conditions through clinical training, research, and educational programs. Our faculty members are recognized experts in interventional pulmonary medicine and in the diagnosis and treatment of complex airway problems.

The Position:
Candidate Responsibilities:

The Pulmonary and Critical Care Division Chief will be expected to deliver patient care in an academic setting, teach medical students, residents, fellows, engage in an independent and extramurally – funded clinical research program, and provide service to the University. Additionally, the Division Chief will continue to build the clinical activities of the program and bring a strong research component to the division. Candidates with current funding are preferred, but candidates who apply for funding once hired will be considered.

The incumbent will be expected to perform a combination of the following duties:

Criteria for the Professor of Line Series:

  • Academic credentials including NIH or other federal grants and prior record of high impact publications are preferred.
  • Direct patient care conduct and substantial and meaningful research.
  • Teach residents and medical students.
  • Perform public and University services.

Excellent teaching is an essential criterion for appointment in this series. Priority will be given to candidates with a proven track record of academic productivity, as demonstrated through high-impact publications, thematic-based research, and/or grant funding.

Criteria for the Professor of Clinical “X” Series:
The incumbent will be expected to direct patient care conduct, substantial and meaningful research; teach residents and medical students; and perform public and University service. 

Professional Qualifications: 

  • M.D. or M.D./Ph.D. degree(s).
  • Board certification or eligibility in field of Pulmonology.
  • Active and unrestricted California Medical License or eligibility for California Medical Licensure.
  • Rank and academic track will be commensurate with candidate training, qualifications, and experience.

Personal Qualifications/Experience:

  • A strong record of research and funding, including NIH and/or other federal awards and a prior record of high impact publications are preferred.
  • Excellent leadership and clinical skills.
  • Interest in clinical teaching.
