Does it Matter Where You Sit at Work?

conference room chairsApparently, it does. At least that is what the latest research has to say. Employers are now inviting their employees to play a fun game, and are shifting their seats after a few weeks. This scatters people who conduct almost similar tasks and it also lines up different departments in every period. So why have employers gotten into this new craze? Because the latest study says that this can result in increasing productivity and collaboration, two of the biggest aims which every company tries to achieve.

The industry experts state that other than some inconvenience hardly any costs are incurred in shifting the desks of employees. Considering the effect this approach can have on a business’s bottom line, the inconvenience part does not matter.

In the last few years, many businesses have switched to unassigned seats and open floor plans. The managers are being ushered out of their offices and the works are being clustered at different sites. A few companies, particularly those that belong to the technology business, have gone a step ahead. These companies are properly deciding which two employees should sit next to each other in an attempt to make them learn from each other and get more work done in the same time frame.

A renowned industry expert stated that changing the position of workers massively changed everything else. A worker mostly interacts with their immediate neighbors while they are at office. In fact, the chances of this are around 40% to 60%, whereas there is only 5% to 10% chance that an employee interacts with someone who is a few rows away. And as for the people on the other floor, they are only talked to during a meeting, and not otherwise.

Businesses should carefully consider the seating arrangement at the workplace. If the employees of the same department sit together, their focus can improve, resulting in a higher efficiency and more productivity. However mixing them together can make them more innovative and they might be able to come up with better ideas and solutions that lead to business growth. They also develop each other’s skills, which improves their performance.

Obviously, every seating arrangement cannot produce the same results. Employers should try out different plans and if one does not seem effective, they should switch to another one.

A lot of things are now changing in today’s world, and this is just one of them.
