How to Ace Your IT Job Interview

IT jobLet’s face it job interviews are always nerve-wracking and even petrifying at times – especially in the IT world.

Why? Because more than likely you will be interviewed by a Senior IT person who can be a little intimidating. They have a lot more experience and knowledge that you and if you mess up the interview, you lose your chance of landing the job.

Another reason is that computer science jobs are among the most sought after and best paying jobs in America. IT professionals like network consultants, project managers and systems engineers fall under this category and the competition for these positions is only getting tougher.

Research indicates that by 2018, computer occupations will dominate STEM occupations i.e. Technology, Math, Science, Engineering by about 51-57%.

So, it is only to your advantage to use the following interview tips to ace your IT interview and land that dream job:

Go well dressed: When making an impression, it’s no different for the IT sector.  Just because the IT industry does not interact with outside people that much, doesn’t mean you can go to the interview dressed in a t-shirt and jeans. Interviewers still take into account how you’re dressed because it also says a lot about the effort you will put in as well as your dedication. If you took a little time to think about your appearance before your interview, it will show the interviewer that you are serious about the job and performing well.

Beef up your resume: Even though you think they are mundane, list out all your important achievements – but don’t lie – make it smart and crisp.

Research the company: The one area where most IT job seekers fail is not knowing who they are interviewing with. If you go into an interview and ask the HR guy what the company is about, you can be assured that you will be helped out the door. Not only should you know about how you can help them with IT services, you should also know about their main products and you should read up on the background of the firm just for the sake of knowing what you’re talking about if they ask you.

Technical knowledge: This is the mainstay of this job and unlike other jobs not only are you expected to be well versed in basic computer IT but you should be well prepared for the technical knowledge part in detail. Even if you lack hands-on job experience or a degree, the interviewer might ignore these facts if you can master this part of the interview.

Don’t forget the practical work: Don’t just focus on theory. Just because you’ve read up and gathered technical knowledge, this isn’t enough to land a good IT job you must make sure to practice using a particular software of system in the lab or at home and be capable of replicating it during the interview – if asked.
