Six Degrees that Offer Better Job Opportunities

4980966_sThese days a college degree won’t guarantee you a job, much less one with a high salary. But if you, or someone you love, is thinking about declaring a major this fall, career counselor and college dean Howard Finch maintains that at least six degrees offer a student better odds of landing a job with a median salary higher than the average:

  • Bachelor’s in Finance – Companies need people who understand how to acquire capital and manage cash flow and debt loads. If financial strategizing is your long suit, a good financial analyst will earn an average of over $75,000 annually, while a financial manager can earn six figures.
  • Bachelor’s in Engineering – Engineering graduates design and develop products ranging from biofuels and medical devices to computer chips and power generators. With skills in scientific visualization and engineering law, they can take a product from the drawing board to the marketplace and earn an annual wage of more than $80,000.
  • Master’s in Information Systems – IT experts apply information technology to business programs, managing the transmittal and storage of data and implementing more efficient information systems. With technology at the forefront of every industry, these sought-after graduates can earn $80,000 to $90,000 annually.
  • Master’s in Business Administration – An MBA graduate understands every aspect of a business from management, finance, and accounting to economics and decision sciences. While there is no limit to what you can earn as a CEO, even beginning MBA grads are likely to earn more than $75,000 to $100,000 a year as management analysts or human resources managers.
  • Maser’s in Psychology – With valuable skills in the science of the mind, including statistics, research, and industrial psychology, grads in this field will earn well over $80,000 annually, combining aspects of teaching, consulting, administration, and private practice.
  • Master’s in Education Administration – As deans or principals, these grads are prepared to oversee a staff of educators, handle finances, and implement school policies. If you plan to pursue a teaching career, a master’s in this field will make you eligible for administrative positions that pay well over $85,000 annually – far more than most classroom teachers earn.
