Position Summary

The Assistant Controller will partner with Accounting and Operations leadership to provide financial oversight of active construction projects, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and accountability across project financials. This individual will serve as a key resource to project teams by auditing project books, reviewing financial performance, and helping strengthen financial controls as owner expectations for transparency continue to increase.

Key Responsibilities

Project Financial Auditing & Analysis

  • Audit project financial records to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards.
  • Review job cost reports, committed costs, forecasts, change orders, owner billings, and subcontractor costs.
  • Identify discrepancies, financial risks, cost overruns, and process improvement opportunities.
  • Validate project financial data and ensure consistency between accounting and operations reporting.
  • Support the development of project audit procedures and financial transparency initiatives.

Construction Accounting

  • Assist with monthly and year-end close processes.
  • Support Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition activities.
  • Review project-related accounting transactions and cost allocations.
  • Assist with preparation of financial statements and supporting schedules.
  • Coordinate with external auditors and support annual audit activities.

Operations Partnership

  • Work directly with Project Managers, Project Executives, and Operations leadership to review project financial performance.
  • Participate in project review meetings and forecasting discussions.
  • Provide guidance on financial controls, job cost management, and accounting procedures.
  • Help drive accountability and consistency across project teams.

Process Improvement

  • Evaluate existing financial reporting and project accounting processes.
  • Recommend and implement improvements that increase visibility into project performance.
  • Assist in developing reporting tools and dashboards that support informed decision-making.
  • Support initiatives designed to improve owner confidence through enhanced financial transparency.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 2-4 years of auditing experience, public accounting experience, or a combination of audit and accounting experience.
  • Experience working within the construction industry or auditing construction-related clients.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both accounting and operations personnel.

Preferred

  • Active pursuit of CPA certification.
  • Experience with job cost accounting, WIP schedules, and percentage-of-completion accounting.
  • Experience working for a general contractor, specialty contractor, or construction-focused CPA firm.
  • Familiarity with construction ERP/accounting systems.
