Job Title: Director of Construction
Location: Tempe, AZ

The Director of Construction reports to the company’s President, leads our construction operations. The Director of Construction is directly responsible for the location’s overall construction operations, including oversight of all project teams. The DOC will oversee the department’s daily operations and ensure that performance and financial goals are achieved through effective team management and direction. They will also be responsible for assessing, evaluating, and reporting on the overall team and individual team member performance.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Takes direction from the President with assigned responsibilities.
  2. Develop and implement strategies to achieve performance and financial goals, leveraging team direction and management to drive results.
  3. Conduct ongoing assessments and evaluations of the department’s performance and individual team member performance, utilizing insights to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
  4. Prepare and allocate budgets, forecasting expenses, and revenues, and optimize resource allocation to achieve departmental objectives.
  5. Research and identify new business opportunities, leveraging the latest business tools and methods to drive innovation and improve efficiency.
  6. Collaborate with other executives and SVPs to decide on business strategies, ensuring alignment with company goals and objectives.
  7. Evaluate department profits and revenue, identifying risks and opportunities to inform strategic decision-making.
  8. Ensure compliance with company policies and local, regional, and federal regulations, working closely with legal and compliance teams to ensure all activities align with regulatory requirements.
  9. Build and approve the department’s hiring plan, ensuring the team is staffed with top talent to achieve departmental goals.
  10. Guide and support Division Managers and Construction Managers, providing mentorship and coaching to drive performance and foster a culture of continuous improvement.
  11. Oversees the creation of master schedules, project timelines, and milestones.
  12. Reviews and approves project-specific budgets.
  13. Trains assigned individuals on Company’s project financial objectives.
  14. Assigns Project Managers to execute negotiated and awarded projects based on experience and customer expectations.
  15. Develops and maintain customer relationships.
  16. Works with Construction Team to ensure that customer expectations are met.
  17. Administers timely performance reviews for direct reports.
  18. Resolves unforeseen project conditions with Project Managers, including subcontractor challenges.
  19. Reviews outgoing Weekly Project Updates for accuracy and completeness before submitting them to the customer.
  20. Reviews the estimating teams’ bid proposals before submission to the customer.
  21. Reviews and sign construction-related documents, including Contracts, Change Orders, Subcontracts, Warranty and Guarantee Letters, and any other document included in the Project Requirements.
  22. Provides support, backup documentation, information, insights, and direction regarding any disputes between the Company, customers, subcontractors, and vendors.
  23. Mentors Company employees by sharing experiences, pitfalls, and solutions.
  24. Serves as a responsible leader, through the direction and guidance of the team, to ensure all safety requirements for all jobs are upheld, adhering to all aspects of our Health, Safety, and Environmental Program both for self-protection and the protection of co-workers, sub-contractors, the public, and the client by supporting all Company safety efforts.
  25. Other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Skills

  1. 15 years experience with related project management roles or equivalent.
  2. Degree in construction management or a related field preferred.
  3. Proven track record of success with measurable achievements in leadership roles.
  4. Experience managing commercial construction teams in all project facets, including onsite and offsite work.
  5. Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills with all levels of the project.
  6. Oversees scheduling, purchasing, and estimating experience and learning management of personnel, vendors, and subcontractors.
  7. Ability to interpret architectural plans and specifications.
  8. Proficient with computers and familiar with Microsoft Software Suite. Experience with Microsoft Project preferred.
  9. Must be able to multi-task, have strong attention to detail, and have excellent time management skills to achieve all established deadlines.
  10. Able to identify a need, remove barriers, and know how to make things happen.
  11. Values diversity of ideas, opinions, and people. Has good common sense and applied logic.
  12. Must possess or be able to obtain an appropriate state driver’s license before employment, along with a clean driving record and reliable transportation.

Our client offers a competitive salary/hourly range of $152,000 – $204,000 – while considering the candidate’s experience and a comprehensive benefits package for full-time employees:
