The Director of Graduate Medical Education (GME) (Market) will function as the most senior administrative leader of graduate medical education in defined markets across our integrated network. Reporting directly to the Senior Director of Academic Affairs, the Market Director will work in close collaboration with central GME leadership and market leadership to ensure compliance with ACGME requirements, alignment with strategic priorities, and the formation and maintenance of academic partnerships. The Market Director will work collaboratively to resolve complex issues and make business decisions for GME in designated markets.
Additionally, the Market Director will support and supervise, build trust through effective communication and collaboration; and work to develop a performance-oriented culture based on mutual respect and accountability. In addition, will provide leadership and strategic direction to ensure GME operational and business plans closely align with Sutter Health’s GME goals and objectives.
This role continually oversees, improves, and increases Sutter Health’s GME landscape / footprint. The role primarily coordinates new and on-going program accreditations, supporting the management of academic sponsor relationships. Responsible for creating and maintaining appropriate business relationships to educate and promote GME-related initiatives and partnerships. Works with local Human Resources and ensures Market leaders across the Sutter network are up to date on critical needs and issues at the local facilities supporting Graduate Medical Education.
The Candidate:
Education/Certification/Licensure
- Master’s degree or equivalent education/experience required.
- Equivalent experience will be accepted in lieu of the required degree or diploma.
Professional Experience
- 7-12 years of recent relevant experience.
- Prior experience with demonstrated increasing level of responsibility in management, preferably in an academic setting or organization.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong leadership, critical thinking, and writing skills.
- Self-motivated and willing to take on new initiatives.
- Strong written, oral, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Effective organizational performance improvement skills.
- Excellent people skills, with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians and other clinician providers, nursing, key departments, and individuals at all levels inside and outside of Sutter Health.

Comprehensive Compensation + Benefits:
The compensation range for base salary for this role is $255,000 – $284,460. The salary range for this role may vary above or below the posted range as determined by location. This range has not been adjusted for any specific geographic differential applicable by area where the position may be filled. Compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training, and organizational needs. Base pay is just one piece of the total rewards program offered by Sutter Health. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
