Seeking a Division Chief of Breast Imaging to lead a busy existing group of 14 breast imagers and a growing mammography division in a NAPBC approved Comprehensive Breast Center, and ACR designated Centers of Excellence.

UMass Memorial Health, the major teaching and academic affiliate of UMass Chan Medical School in Worcester, MA, is actively recruiting a Board-certified, fellowship-trained Chief of Breast Imaging to lead an expanding division, performing over 85,000 breast imaging studies/procedures per year across 12 sites throughout central Massachusetts. The Chief will have the opportunity to advance her/his career path with an appointment as Vice Chair of Education, depending on the candidate’s level of expertise. The Breast Radiologist will bring extensive experience as an educator to the department. Under the leadership of the Chair of Radiology, Dr. Max Rosen, this system-wide appointment will work closely with the resident and fellowship program directors to implement new curriculum and workshops and to promote an educational culture at UMass.

The main (University) campus provides the primary venue for our Comprehensive Breast Center, which is NAPBC accredited, and offers state-of-the art imaging equipment. All community sites are recognized as Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence by the ACR.

The Division Chief of Breast Imaging will be a committed leader with expertise in all aspects of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography, contrast-enhanced mammography, breast ultrasound, ABUS, MRI, and multimodality image-guided breast interventions. The Division Chief will work in close collaboration with the Chair of Radiology and multidisciplinary leaders of our Breast Cancer Service line to help optimize breast care in the region.

Education & Research Opportunities:
UMass Chan Medical School’s new VISTA curriculum coupled with expansion of the medical school class provides multiple opportunities for educational leadership and mentorship. Approximately 20 residents rotate in the Breast Imaging Division throughout the year and work alongside our breast imaging fellow. The Division also offers robust, cutting-edge research programs in AI, Breast MRI, and collaborative research efforts in Breast CT.

Professional Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated a record of clinical and academic achievement in the subspecialty of Breast Imaging, as well as managerial experience and interest. The ability to be flexible and discover creative solutions to current health care challenges will be a key component of the candidate’s future success. Academic rank is anticipated to be at Associate Professor level or higher.

About the UMass Radiology Department:
The department is comprised of approximately 85 fellowship-trained Radiologists organized into specialized divisions, trains 16 diagnostic (DR) residents (4 per year) and 9 fellows. The Department also includes approximately 15 PhDs and is supported by more than $6M per year in research funding.

UMASS RADIOLOGY:

Join a busy existing group of 10 breast imagers and one breast imaging fellow in a NAPBC approved Comprehensive Breast Center and ACR designated Centers of Excellence. The breast imaging case volume currently includes approximately 45,000 mammograms, 5,000 dedicated breast ultrasounds, 800 breast MRIs and 4,000 interventional procedures per year – a level of experience that no other hospital in central Massachusetts can match.

The environment is completely digital and includes 3T and 1.5T MRI suites, seven tomosynthesis units, eight non tomosynthesis units (all Hologic and plans to upgrade some of these units), six ultrasound suites (Philips IU 22, all these units are being updated to EPIQ Elite Diagnostic Ultrasound Systemin a phased manner), including an ABUS suite (GE Invenia 2.0), and an upright Affirm unit for 3D biopsies, and two prone LORADS tables. Our needle localizations at the main university campus are mostly wire free (Savi-Scout). All UMass radiology sites are fully integrated into the same PACS system (AGFA) and enterprise-wide EPIC EMR.

There are numerous research, clinical and resident/fellow teaching opportunities, including participation in NIH funded (R01) research. UMass is also a participating site for the TMIST trial, allowing for numerous opportunities for clinical and research collaboration within the fastest growing research institution in the United States.

The Department of Radiology performs over 900,000 studies per year, across five hospitals and an outpatient imaging center in central Massachusetts. Current faculty include 65 fellowship-trained radiologists, all practicing in organ or modality-based divisions, including a 24/7/365 Emergency Radiology Division.
