Sutter Health is actively recruiting for a strategic and experienced physician educator to lead the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Sutter Health Alta Bates Summit Medical Center (ABSMC), the Sponsoring Institution. Sutter Health Alta Bates Summit Medical Center is a nationally recognized, multi-campus acute care medical center with more than 1,000 licensed beds, over 4,500 employees, and 1,000 active physicians. Its Centers of Excellence include Women’s and Infants (featuring a level III Newborn ICU), Cardiovascular, Orthopedics, and Oncology, serving Berkeley, Oakland, and the greater East Bay Area.

Our ACGME-accredited GME programs offer learners a training experience that will prepare them to lead the field in delivering advanced, compassionate, evidence-based care to patients across the diverse communities we serve in our integrated network. Sutter Health is projected to add more than 150,000 residents over the next 20 years, including the growth of practice lines in Internal Medicine.

  • Patient Caseload: Annually, ABSMC records more than 35,000 patient discharges, 7,000 births, and a nationally recognized Cardiovascular service.
  • Access to Extensive Health Network, including acute care hospitals, physician care centers, ambulatory care settings, visiting nurse and hospice agencies, and behavioral health centers throughout Northern California and Hawaii. Position Summary:

The Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program will be a confident, visionary leader with the maturity, integrity, knowledge, and cultural sensitivity to inspire, develop, and recruit strong faculty and residents, and to advance collaborative relationships with our community partners. The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director at ABSMC has the responsibility, authority, and accountability for administration and operations; teaching, mentorship, and scholarly activity; faculty development; faculty and resident recruitment, selection, and evaluation; remediation and promotion of residents, including disciplinary action; supervision of residents; and residents’ clinical and didactic education in the context of patient care. The Program Director is responsible for the standards, quality, reputation, and ongoing improvement of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at ABSMC.

This residency will be a mixture of inpatient and outpatient practice, with an inpatient call-schedule to be determined. The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director will divide their time between one’s own clinical practice and the programmatic responsibilities of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at ABSMC. The Program Director will also be responsible for identifying evidence-based practice improvements in the field of Internal Medicine.

The Candidate:
Professional Qualifications/Experience
The Internal Medicine Residency Program Director must possess:
  • M.D. or D.O. medical degree is required.
  • Current certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) or American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine (AOBIM); or hold credentials deemed equivalent to Certification by the ACGME’s Internal Medicine Residency Review Committee is required.
  • At least 3-5 years of documented educational and/or administrative experience; Possessing specialty expertise and clinical competence as an actively practicing physician is required.
  • Experience as Core Faculty, Program Director, Assistant/Associate Program Director, or Site Director in an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine Residency Program. Preferably, have experience in starting GME programs from the ground-up. The ideal candidate should possess significant experience in teaching, mentoring, and progressive leadership.
  • Administrative program experience, such as serving on an ACGME-accredited program’s Clinical Competency Committee (CCC), Program Evaluation Committee (PEC), or Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) preferred.
  • Leadership experience in GME, such as Department Chair, Chair of CCC or PEC, Research Director, etc. preferred.
  • Candidates with recent scholarly activity such as peer-reviewed funding, publication of original research or review articles in peer-reviewed journals, chapters in textbooks, publication or presentation of case reports or clinical series at scientific society meetings, or participation in local, regional, or national committees or organizations are strongly preferred.
  • Have unrestricted credentials within Sutter Health and be licensed, or able to obtain a license, to practice medicine in the State of California upon date of hire.
