The Construction Superintendent is responsible for leading day-to-day field operations on commercial construction projects from mobilization through completion. This position provides onsite leadership for subcontractors and field personnel while maintaining accountability for safety, quality, schedule, productivity, and coordination.
This position serves as a key point of contact in the field and works closely with project management, design partners, inspectors, owners, and trade contractors to identify issues early and keep work progressing according to project requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Direct and coordinate daily construction activities and onsite trade partners.
- Maintain a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with applicable company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Review drawings, specifications, schedules, and other project documentation to understand upcoming work and field requirements.
- Monitor construction activities for compliance with contract documents and established quality standards.
- Coordinate subcontractor sequencing, manpower, deliveries, equipment, and site logistics to support the project schedule.
- Partner with the Project Manager to evaluate progress, resolve field issues, and anticipate potential impacts to schedule or cost.
- Lead field communication with subcontractors and coordinate as needed with owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, and other project stakeholders.
- Maintain accurate daily documentation of site activity, including manpower, work completed, safety matters, weather, meetings, deliveries, and schedule progress.
- Understand subcontractor scopes of work and monitor performance against project requirements and milestones.
- Coordinate the availability and proper use of tools, equipment, materials, and other field resources.
- Perform and verify field layout as required and assist with quantity takeoffs for materials and scopes of work.
- Identify constructability concerns, conflicts, or field conditions and work with the appropriate project team members to develop solutions.
- Promote an organized, professional, and productive jobsite throughout construction.
- Support punch-list activities, inspections, project closeout, and turnover.
Qualifications
- Minimum of four years of experience as a Superintendent or in a comparable field leadership role within commercial construction.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Strong working knowledge of commercial construction methods, sequencing, building systems, and trade coordination.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and related project documentation.
- Working knowledge of site layout practices and construction layout equipment.
- Ability to perform basic construction quantity takeoffs, including concrete, lumber, and other common materials.
- Strong understanding of carpentry and general building practices.
- Familiarity with construction equipment such as skid steers, backhoes, forklifts, aerial lifts, and similar equipment.
- Strong planning, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to evaluate field conditions and make timely decisions with consideration for safety, quality, schedule, cost, and project objectives.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to build productive working relationships with subcontractors, field personnel, clients, design professionals, inspectors, and project management teams.
- Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
