District Medical Group, in conjunction with Valleywise Health, seeks a mission-driven physician leader specialized in internal medicine to join the Valleywise Health System leadership team as Department Chair of Internal Medicine. The Chair will lead the department while advancing excellence in diagnosis, treatment, transformative research, and educationsupporting the health and well-being of adult, senior, and geriatric patients.

DMG medical specialists are the exclusive providers of care at Valleywise Health Medical Center (VHMC)—the Phoenix area’s only public teaching health system—and community clinics and serve patients across the Valley. DMG medical specialists staff and practice in a 290-bed hospital that includes a level lll NICU, level 1 Adult Trauma Center, Arizona’s only nationally verified burn center—the Arizona Burn Center, a full complement of pediatric services, and 11 corresponding Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) outpatient clinics that provide care for more than 450,000 patients annually.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead an established program at a safety-net healthcare system that will continue to have significant impact on the quality of care delivery and health outcomes of this population. The Chair of Internal Medicine will be a well-rounded and collaborative clinician with proven administrative experience and a strong passion for patient care, medical education, research and scholarly activity, and community outreach. This position will be employed by District Medical Group and will be staffed at Valleywise Health Medical Center in Phoenix, AZ. The Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine reports and will work closely with the Chief Executive Officer at District Medical Group and the Chief Clinical Officer of Valleywise Health. The Department Chair, Internal Medicine serves on the Physician Leadership Team of DMG and interacts with the other clinical chairs and the administrative leadership of FQHC and hospital operations at Valleywise Health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The position requires 50% clinical care in the candidate’s area of specialization.
  • Ensures medicine coverage of a 290-bed tertiary safety net hospital that is Level 1 trauma and internationally recognized burn center.
  • Manage Primary Care Internists in multiple Valleywise Health FQHCs.
  • Maintain the 9,000+ patients that are admitted to the medical services annually.
  • Manage on-site IM consultations to 3 Valleywise Health Behavioral Health hospitals (census appx. 400 collectively).
  • One of two sites for Creighton Arizona Health Education Alliance, ACGME Internal Medicine Residency with a total of 80 residents, and GI, Cardiology, Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Surgical Critical Care fellowships. Responsible for departmental administration, clinical activities, and continued development of the Internal Medicine Residency as well as medical student rotations at Valleywise Health Medical Center.
  • IM faculty participation in system leadership committees including Chief of Staff, IRB director, 2 physician advisors, chairs of medical executive committees, chair infection control/antibiotic stewardship, etc.
  • Maintain an active research and scholarly activity.
Required Training and Experience:
    M.D., D.O. Degree and Active Board Certification in Internal Medicine by the ABIM or AOBIM. Mid-career physician with at least five (5) years of documented leadership, supervising, and/or administrative experience in a director or similar physician leadership role. Possessing specialty expertise in Internal Medicine Clinical Practice and demonstrating clinical competence as a practicing physician is required. Licensed or eligible to practice medicine in the state of Arizona is required upon hire.
