UAMS seeks a dynamic leader to serve as the Director of the Cancer Service Line and Chief of Hematology/Oncology. This requires a full-time position to oversee clinical operations, research, education, and patient care across UAMS and its community oncology practices. The successful candidate will unify multidisciplinary teams, drive statewide expansion of oncology services, and recruit top-tier clinical talent to support UAMS’s growth.

The UAMS Cancer Service Line provides cutting-edge treatments in Medical, Surgical, and Radiation Oncology, and is rated among the top 10% nationally for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report in the 2025-2026 Best Hospitals ranking, and is the only hospital in Arkansas to make the list of the nation’s top cancer centers. UAMS is certified by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT) for its bone marrow and tissue transplant programs, the only transplant program in Arkansas, and is also home to the internationally recognized UAMS Myeloma Center. The state-of-the-art Proton Center of Arkansas opened in 2023 and is the only provider of proton therapy in the state. UAMS received Magnet designation in November 2024 from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. The Cancer Service Line is staffed by 74 oncology faculty members who are recruited through 10 College of Medicine Departments resulting in a complex but highly collaborative practice.

Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Administration:
  • Provide strategic leadership for the Division of Hematology/Oncology and the cancer service line to ensure integration of clinical, academic, and research missions.
  • Collaborate with UAMS leadership to define goals, budgets, and resources for the cancer service line.
  • Develop and implement clinical policies to ensure high-quality patient care and best practices.
  • Supervise and mentor clinical faculty, advanced practice providers (APPs), and residents, fostering a culture of safety, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Clinical Oversight & Quality Improvement:
  • Oversee clinical care, ensuring adherence to evidence-based practices and high patient safety standards.
  • Monitor clinical outcomes, quality metrics, and patient satisfaction, driving initiatives to improve care and reduce variability.
  • Lead efforts to enhance clinical research integration into practice and support academic programs.
Strategic Planning & Development:
  • Contribute to the growth of UAMS’s oncology services, focusing on expanding outreach, community practice integration, and competitive positioning.
  • Lead recruitment and retention of top-tier clinical talent to strengthen the division of hematology oncology division.
  • Design and implement continuing medical education (CME) and training programs for faculty and staff.
Operational Management:
  • Oversee clinical staffing, scheduling, and performance evaluations to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Manage the division’s financial performance, optimizing resources and controlling costs.
  • Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations and accreditation standards.
Cultural & Leadership Impact:
  • Drive organizational change to improve faculty engagement, unifying fractured oncology teams, and fostering a culture of collaboration.
  • Work closely with leadership to streamline operations and enhance communication across the division.
Clinical Program Growth:
  • Manage substantial patient volumes, including 10,000–11,000 new patient visits and 70,000–80,000 established patient visits annually, with 18,000 chemotherapy infusion sessions in FY25.
  • Lead expansion efforts across UAMS’s main campus and regional sites, positioning UAMS as a leader in statewide cancer care.
Qualifications:
  • Education: M.D., D.O., or equivalent; Board certification in Hematology/Oncology.
  • Experience: Proven leadership experience in academic and clinical oncology settings, with a strong track record in recruiting and developing top-tier clinical talent.
  • Skills: Strong clinical expertise, leadership, and organizational skills; commitment to academic excellence and innovative patient care.
