Wayne State University School of Medicine and Wayne Health are seeking a physician leader of unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience for the Chief of the Division of General Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine, one of the largest clinical departments in the School of Medicine.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

The Division of General Medicine at Wayne State University is the second largest division within the Department of Internal Medicine and represents a very diverse group of physicians, nurse clinicians, Ph.D. scientists, research-assistants, and staff members. The division includes the sections of Medicine/Pediatrics and the Academic Hospitalist Program. The division’s research activities focus on health care prevention, education, and systems of health care delivery.

This unique opportunity is designed for an entrepreneurial-minded, market-driven clinical leader to oversee the strategic growth and direction for all aspects of the division with an emphasis on operational integration. The Chief of General Medicine will be responsible for all planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the division’s academic, research, and clinical programs. The Chief will possess the strategic vision to oversee program development, enhancing Detroit’s unique clinical, educational, and community mission and its training pipeline.

Under the leadership and guidance of the esteemed Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, the Division Chief must be able to balance clinical leadership with educational responsibilities tied to residency programs and quality outcomes to enhance service and education integration.

The successful candidate will be recognized as an outstanding leader with a track record in clinical care, research, and teaching at a nationally recognized program. The Chief will demonstrate the highest levels of professionalism, personal commitment, integrity, and leadership while advancing the department’s mission. Current board certification in internal medicine is required. The ideal candidate will bring an entrepreneurial leadership style with a demonstrated ability to drive strategic growth.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Hold an MD, DO or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
• Be board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the State of Michigan.
• Board certification in a subspecialty of Internal Medicine.
• Be eligible for medical staff privileges at Wayne Health.
• Have greater than five (5) years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director, etc.) in an academic medical center setting.
• Demonstrated track record of national distinction in teaching, clinical care, and research discovery in an academic department of medicine or comparable environment.
• National distinction through service on national committees or similar professional societies.
• Demonstrated commitment to patient care, reflecting a service-oriented, team-based philosophy with hospital administration and health professional colleagues from all disciplines, departments, and specialties.
• Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS, etc.).
• Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic (educational, patient care, research) programs and services.
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in major subspecialty division/section at an academic department of internal medicine.
• ECRP experience is highly preferred.
