Building upon the pioneering research and international leadership in multidisciplinary cancer care, innovative treatments, clinical trials, and strong patient focus care, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking a visionary academic Medical Physicist to join the UAMS Cancer Service Line and Department of Radiation Oncology within a collaborative, well-resourced structure. The Proton Center of Arkansas is the first in the state and only the 43rd in the nation to provide the most advanced cancer radiation treatment in the world. This individual will contribute to a new era of growth and influence for UAMS as a leader in statewide cancer care.
Mission of the Medical Physicist Faculty
This position supports the Department of Radiation Oncology, Cancer Service Line, and Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute. All physicist faculty have the opportunity to be trained to participate in both proton and photon therapy. Key responsibilities include meeting the strategic priorities of the department and the Cancer Service Line; assisting in the development and implementation of departmental standards for physics, dosimetry, engineering, and informatics in accordance with accrediting regulations; and performing other duties as assigned to strengthen UAMS’s position as the leading cancer provider in Arkansas, while advancing the mission of the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute
UAMS Ranks Top 10% in U.S. for Cancer Care
The UAMS Cancer Service Line provides comprehensive medical, surgical, and radiation oncology care and is ranked in the top 10% nationally for cancer care by U.S. News & World Report (2025–2026), the only cancer program in Arkansas to receive this recognition. UAMS is rated high performing in leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, as well as colon, gynecologic, and lung cancer surgery.
UAMS is home to the state’s only FACT-accredited bone marrow and tissue transplant program and the internationally recognized UAMS Myeloma Center. The Proton Center of Arkansas, the state’s only proton therapy facility, opened in 2023. In 2024, UAMS achieved Magnet designation, reflecting excellence in nursing practice and leadership. The Cancer Service Line comprises more than 70 oncology faculty members across 10 College of Medicine departments, fostering a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.
Academic Medical Physicist Faculty
Required Qualifications:
- PhD or MS degree from an accredited institution.
- Successful completion of a CAMPEP-accredited medical physics graduate program/CAMPEP-accredited residency program.
- Experience with proton therapy is preferred, though not required.
- Experience with proton therapy and the RayStation treatment planning system is a plus.
- Eligibility for licensure in the State of Arkansas.
- Credentials and scholarly record supporting appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor or Professor at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.
- Ability to meet the priorities of the department and the Cancer Service Line.
- Demonstrated collaborative, engaging, transparent, and visionary leadership style.
