General Description:
The Nursing Faculty I and Nursing Faculty II positions require a strong commitment to teaching and diversity while incorporating technology and innovation in the delivery of instruction. The ability to infuse innovative approaches into the teaching/learning process is essential. Nursing Faculty must be able to work actively and collegially within and outside of the department. The faculty teach medical surgical and specialties in theory, lab and clinical in the Licensed Practical Nursing Program. Other related faculty responsibilities may be performed as required.
Reports To: Nursing Program Administrator
Qualifications:
- At least 2 years’ experience in clinical nursing practice; and A baccalaureate degree or higher with a major in nursing. Two (2) years clinical nursing experience with at least one year in area of specialty; solid foundation in evidence-based teaching or clinical practice. Ability to work during the day and/or evenings.
- Current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Illinois or in an Interstate Nurse Licensure Compact state.
- Experience for at least 2 calendar years in the full-time practice of nursing as a registered nurse.
- Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association.
- Demonstrated leadership ability.
- Excellent interpersonal skills written and oral communication.
- Organizational and time management skills and the ability to multitask.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including some evenings.
- Ability to inspire students to the highest level of achievement in preparation for meeting employer expectations.
- Ability to organize, problem solve, and function as a team member within established school, state, feral and accrediting agency regulations, policies, and procedures.
Overall Responsibilities:
Class Instruction
- Contribute to the revision and evaluation of the philosophy, outcomes, and curriculum plan of the program.
- Accept direct responsibility for teaching designed courses after consultation with other faculty members and with the Nursing Program Administrator
- Adhere to the courses syllabus and ensure consistency among all sections of the courses and periodically meet with Course Lead to review syllabus.
- File semester syllabus for each course taught with Nursing Administrative Coordinator.
- Ensure that the syllabus follows published guidelines.
- Provide a syllabus to each nursing student thereby keeping students informed and updated regarding course content, requirements, course components including required enrichment activities and homework, evaluation procedure and attendance.
- Plan each lesson, both as to content and method, to make each class minute meaningful.
- Plan the student’s clinical and lab experience based on course objectives and student learning needs.
- Study and utilize students’ learning styles in each class to facilitate the best teaching and learning situations.
- Create a climate conductive to learning.
- Assess students’ using standardized student packages at the start of the semester to establish students background knowledge and build instructors around this base line.
- Adhere to Academic Monitoring plan and assist as needed.
- Recommend textbooks and complete bibliographies of specialized materials for outside reading assignments; promote use of library materials; recommend classroom and laboratory equipment.
- Assign appropriate homework that requires at least two hours of preparation for every lecture hour, grade it and return it to students in a timely manner.
- Evaluate each nursing student’s achievement and progress with input from clinical and lab instructors as appropriate.
- Design and implement teaching strategies that will assist nursing to meet the course objectives or outcomes.
- Participate in the evaluation of students’ competencies throughout the semester and the end of semester.
- Review and adhere to the policies, procedures, and standards of ATS, the Nursing Program, Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation (IDFPR), and Accreditation (ABHES).
- It is the professional responsibility of each faculty member to contribute to and cooperate with the committees formed to ensure the continued accreditation of the college and program.
- Deliver, and evaluate course curricula, including, but not limited to, syllabi, student outcome measures, instructional strategies, and course summaries for accreditation.
- Contribute to and perform on college committees that benefit the college and program.
- Maintain office hours (8-10 contact hours per week).
- Maintain, record, and submit student grades.
- Collaborate with clinical education partners in instructional delivery and supervision of student experiences in the clinical setting, including, but not limited to, orientation, adherence to agency policies/procedures, communication with members of the healthcare team, student clinical evaluation.
- Serve as professional role model and example of nurse leader for students, the College and its stakeholders.
- Demonstrates nursing and teaching expertise, including the use of technology and simulation.
- Engage in ongoing personal and professional development and scholarly activities.
- Engage in community outreach activities.
- Be willing to teach online and/or blended courses.
Lab Responsibilities
- Supports the teaching of nursing skills by performing the skills and demonstrating to students.
- Providing learning experiences in assigned courses.
- Assisting students in overcoming specific clinical skills deficits
- Setting up and taking down laboratory demonstrations
- Assume responsibility and provide supervision of students in the laboratory setting.
- Participate and/or develop critical thinking scenarios for the classroom and for use in the nursing skills laboratory.
- Promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the learning and practice of nursing skills.
- Participate and/or develop scenarios for low and high-fidelity simulations in the nursing skills laboratory.
- Monitor equipment and supplies for replacement, repairs, and disposal.
- Ensure maintenance of an orderly, clean, and organized skills laboratory.
- Develop skills stations, coordinate, and evaluate skills testing.
Academic Guidelines
- Demonstrate a genuine concern for each student through personal conferences.
- Provide students with progress reports for midterms and discuss with them strategies for reaching the required goals.
- Post and maintain office hours for student consultations.
- Provide student mentoring, as assigned, to students currently enrolled in the program.
Professional Development
- Analyze the competencies of students and use the results to evaluate course content.
- Evaluate and use current nursing and related research within course content.
- Participate in Faculty Organization Committee and other committees as assigned.
- Suggest, initiate and participate in studies of factors affecting the program curriculum.
- Evaluate each course as an integral part of the curriculum and evaluate the teaching/learning experience in each course.
- Develop and implement annual professional growth and development objectives and provide evidence of continuous professional growth.
- Participate in orientation and in-service training in accordance with the current policy.
General Responsibilities
- Become thoroughly familiar with all college policies and implement, uphold, and enforce all program policies as written.
- Report to work on time.
- Attend faculty meetings.
- Ensure that assigned classes are taught as scheduled.
- Dress professionally at all times.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance and student grading. Submit notification of Unofficial Withdrawal to the Registrar for any students who stop attending classes for more than two weeks.
- Record students’ final grades,
- Complete and sign Full Distance Education and Blended Modality Faculty Expectations document.
- Be available to work on campus per your scheduled hours.
Faculty Evaluation
- Participate in faculty evaluation via self-evaluation at least once per year.
- Encourage students to evaluate the course you teach, and yourself.
- Participate in peer view.
- Strive for the qualities delineated in the criteria for faculty evaluation used by the college.
