The Department of Family Medicine of the University of Connecticut is seeking a Vice Chair of Clinical Operations, Quality and Innovation. Family Medicine is a well-established department, with a fully accredited residency program, a sports medicine fellowship, embedded behavioral health, and several practices across two different healthcare organizations (UConn Health and Trinity Health of New England). The state of Connecticut is moving forward with plans to double the percent of healthcare spent on primary care over the next several years with a focus on payment for advanced primary care teams and use of information technology to support care. This is an opportunity to take a leadership role at the department, institutional, and state levels with CMS’ States Advancing AHEAD Model – a collaborative state effort to improve primary care service delivery.

The Vice Chair will work with the Chair to grow the clinical services provided and footprint of the department in innovative ways that improve quality and promote health equity, while also facilitating excellence in education and research. The selected individual will help develop and execute departmental strategies that expand the number of faculty, locations of care delivery and the range of clinical services delivered in an innovative fashion. He or she will be responsible for oversight of quality improvement initiatives within the department and will work with leadership at both the University and affiliated healthcare organizations.

The ideal candidate will have some experience with budget preparation, a keen interest in operational improvement, experience managing people, and a growth mindset. Other characteristics include trust, integrity, strong work ethic, ability to collaborate, positive attitude, and leading by example.

Responsibilities:
  • The position involves clinical care in a suburban clinical site and serving in a medical director role at that location as well as precepting in an urban family medicine residency program.
  • Assist in medical student teaching during clinical care.
  • The development and maintenance of efficient and effective clinical operations and collaborative work relationships within Family Medicine.
  • Assist in development, implementation and monitoring of a departmental growth strategy.
  • Development and expansion of innovative clinical programs, including innovative use of technology.
  • Design and implementation of clinical workflow improvements.
  • Be responsible for reporting on provider performance and quality.
  • Assist in recruitment of faculty and staff.
  • Mentor junior faculty, ancillary providers, residents, staff, and students.
Required Training and Experience:
  • Board Certification in Family Medicine with a current CT state license or eligibility to obtain one.
  • Five (5) plus years of experience leading progressive improvements within a clinical environment.
  • Experience leading Quality Improvement initiatives with demonstrated experience in use of successful techniques such as Lean/Six Sigma, Root Cause analysis, FMEA, PDSA cycles, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a complex work environment.
Preferred Training and Experience:
  • Additional training such as an MBA, MHA, MPH or Clinical Informatics training with a focus on clinical environment growth and innovation.
  • Experience with Value Based Care design, implementation, and monitoring outcomes.
  • Experience with using data from an EHR for data analysis, report generation, dashboard development, and workflow enhancement.
  • Experience working within an academic clinical, teaching, and research environment.
  • Evidence of scholarly work as demonstrated by regional or national presentations and publications regarding Quality Improvement, Healthcare System Redesign, or similar topics.
  • Experience consistent with appointment at senior rank (Associate professor) is preferred.
  • Skill with financial and strategic planning at a division or departmental level.
