Stroll down the halls at one of Indiana University Health’s 16 hospitals and you may see something new: tattoos on nurses, physicians and other staff members bared in their vibrant glory to patients and caregivers. Maybe you’ll catch a streak of blue hair on a physician’s head or a piercing through the nose.

“Tattoos have to be considered another indicator of traditionally conservative institutions that have realized they need to become more sensitive to the changing culture,” says Eric Dickerson, managing director of Kaye Bassman International, a recruiting firm that specializes in academic medical groups.
