Recent evidence suggests good non-clinical practice employees — from receptionists, billers and coders to managers and department heads — have gotten harder to hire and keep and that you’ll have to spend money and look in new directions to do so.

Demographic and economic factors are part of the reason for this scarcity. “We’ve known for a while the baby boomer generation is retiring,” says Eric Dickerson, managing director and senior practice leader with Kaye/Bassman International Corp in Plano, Texas. “On the flip slide, the generation that would succeed them and backfill those roles — the ‘baby busters’ — are just not there” in sufficient numbers to replace them, says Dickerson. Together with a low unemployment trend in recent years, “this creates a war for talent.”
