Nathan Courville, Kaye/Bassman Managing Director, Featured in Health Payer Specialist, Insurer CEO Killing Raises Recruiting Questions in Profession Already Facing Challenges

The fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare’s CEO has heightened safety concerns and public scrutiny, yet experts say it could inspire young talent to drive change in an industry already grappling with workforce and leadership challenges.

In an industry with an ultra-low unemployment rate and an aging workforce, it’s crucial for insurance companies to bring on new employees. But it’s unclear what impact the slaying of UnitedHealthcare’s chief executive might have on insurers’ ability to land new talent.

While some experts say interest in the industry hasn’t waned, five major recruiting firms declined to discuss the current recruiting situation with Health Payer Specialist.

With young people, it can be a challenge simply getting them to consider a career in the insurance industry, said Nathan Courville, managing director and practice leader for risk management and insurance at Kaye/Bassman International in Plano, Texas.

Insurance often is seen as a “very archaic industry,” Courville said, and younger workers are unaware of the role technology plays.

“They don’t realize how sophisticated it is,” Courville said, but once they are exposed to the industry “it can become quite appealing.”
