If you’re considering a move from one unit or facility to another, or from one type of nursing field to another, make sure you know what you’re getting into and whether you’re qualified for it. Just because you’re a RN doesn’t mean you have an automatic passport into any RN job.
For instance, during an interview for a position in the pediatrics ER, a nurse who then worked in the adult ER told the interviewer that kids are “little adults.” That’s hardly the case, of course, and the comment ended the nurse’s chance of getting the job.
Switching specialties is more common among younger nurses, says Rae Ellen Douglas, nursing practice leader at Kaye/Bassman International Corp. in Dallas. Experienced nurses get quite attached to their specialty.
“Like many professionals, you find what you enjoy and enjoy doing it well,” she says. “But there are nurses who want a different shift — they’re tired of nights and there are no openings on the day shift so they move someplace else.”
